Our Difference
The majority of galleries in Southern Maryland are either frame shops or co-operatives. Frame shops have limited space for art. Their owners love art and want to support it. But the main focus of their efforts and majority of their business is derived from selling frames – not art.

Co-operatives function like social clubs, requiring tremendous amounts of the artist’s time to attend meetings, attend openings and sit in the gallery. As everyone knows, trying to get creative, independent people to go in a single direction is like herding cats – an exercise in frustration. Although the networking and camaraderie is great, many artists do not have the time necessary to participate in these groups. Artists want to create art – not spend their time attending meetings or becoming shopkeepers!

Herons Way Gallery feels that there is a better way. We have separated the business functions from the artistic activities. The owners provide business leadership. Our artists provide art. The only requirement that we place on our artists is that they create art. This has been very effective. We have a wide variety of art and artists and something new and exciting is happening every month!

GALLERY INFORMATION

Heron’s Way Gallery is owned by artists and operated to support artists and those who love art. We are a different kind of art gallery. We have separated the business functions from the artistic functions of a gallery. The only requirement that we have of our artists is that they create art. As a result, our artists are creating new and vibrant works every month! By allowing artists to focus on art, the Gallery managers can focus on the business aspects and provide better service to our artists and our customers.

The Gallery has 2 major service focuses:

Artistic Support : Enabling artists to present their works to our customers through art shows and events.

Business and Interior Decorator Support : Providing support to businesses and interior designers in expressing their commitment to the local community by displaying the works of local artists in their offices.

Artistic Support
Heron’s Way Gallery supports multiple art shows every month. These shows are hung before the first Friday of the month, and end on the next to last day of the month.

First Friday Celebration: Each 1st Friday of the month the Gallery participates in a Leonardtown-wide party from 5 – 8 pm. We always host a reception or have a preview of work that will be formally opened later in the month. This is lots of fun. There is more to do, see and hear than you can possibly experience in one evening. Come often and come hungry!

Monthly Show: Each month gallery members and guest artists participate in an art show themed to the season, an idea or simply as a celebration of art. The reception is usually held on the 2nd Saturday of the month.

Featured Artist Show: Gallery members are provided an opportunity to showcase the full range of their work with special shows and receptions. This serves as an incentive to create new works and energizes the whole gallery as new and exciting art is introduced.

Business and Interior Decorator Support
Businesses and Interior Decorators want to support the local art community by buying local art. When a business displays local artwork, it is a demonstration that the business values and respects the community in which it is located. Clients and employees recognize this and it helps creates a positive business environment.

Businesses and interior decorators that support business clients have several requirements:

Because Heron’s Way Gallery works directly with the artists, we are able to accommodate your needs. Many of our artists have created public art installations and are up to the challenges your business may provide them. Most artists have large works that they do not display in galleries that cater to homeowners. The artists of Heron’s Way Gallery want their works hanging in your business. We are committed to making your investment in local art a positive and professional experience.
